"All through veterinary school, my master's and post-grad training, my internship and residency, I found orthopaedics rewarding. I've always enjoyed the technology, the physics, the science, and I still do, but in the end, the best reward is to see my patients go back to doing the things they like to do and their people like to do with them."

Dr. Lisa Klopp, DVM, MS, DACVIM

Board Certified Neurosurgeon
Neurology and Neurosurgery

Dr. Klopp has published articles on both veterinary and human neurological problems and has advanced the technology and treatment outcomes for brain tumors in dogs and cats. She's an advocate for the use of minimally invasive endoscope-assisted neurosurgical procedures and a proponent of both interventional pain management and physical therapy for the neurological patient.

After graduating from Colorado State University Veterinary School in 1992, Dr. Klopp completed a yearlong internship working with small animals at North Carolina State University followed by another year of training in anatomic pathology at the University of Arizona. In 1997, she completed her residency in neurology and neurosurgery at Auburn University, earning a master's degree studying surgical approaches to the brain stem in dogs. After teaching at both the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and Colorado State University, Dr. Klopp joined The Sams Clinic in 2009.

"My interest in neurology began in high school when a childhood friend was injured in a diving accident. But it wasn't until college that I knew I wanted to care for animals, marrying my two interests by enrolling in veterinary school. Working in university clinics was extremely rewarding, and I'm even happier at The Sams Clinic where I'm able to give my undivided attention to caring for our patients."

Dr. Alexander Hawley, DVM, MS, DACVA

Board Certified Anesthesiologist, Certified Acupuncturist
Anesthesia and Pain Management

Dr. Hawley joined The Sams Clinic in 2009. As the on-staff anesthesiologist, he vigilantly monitors patients before, during and after surgery to ensure their well-being and comfort. He wants pets to be free of anxiety and pain yet alert after surgery, a goal that he accomplishes by using a progressive, multimodal approach, combining lower doses of a variety of medicines. As the director of our pain management clinic, Dr. Hawley supplements more conventional protocols with both state-of-the-art allopathic therapies and acupuncture.

After obtaining his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Colorado State University in 2005, Dr. Hawley went on to do a yearlong internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Kansas State University followed by a three-year residency in anesthesiology at Tufts University. He also holds a master's degree in anatomy. Dr. Hawley's cutting-edge research focuses on the impact of the genetic makeup of dogs, cat and horses on their individual responses to pain and drug therapy. He's also interested in new pharmacological treatments for osteoarthritis and other chronic painful conditions.

"The collaborative setting of The Sams Clinic gives me the unique chance to follow a patient from diagnosis through treatment to rehabilitation. I act as an ally for pets, making them as comfortable as possible, before, during and after surgery."
