Tumors affecting the bone or originating from the bone can require removal as part of the optimal treatment. These tumors are treated with the best cure and cosmetic result in mind. In some tumors, such as osteosarcoma (a tumor of bone origin), chemotherapy can help significantly. Advances in chemotherapy have made its use much more rewarding. Maxillectomy Maxillectomy refers to removing a portion of the upper jaw. This is done for certain tumors that involve the area. The procedure sounds daunting but is very straight forward and results are usually cosmetic. Many owners and friends are unable to tell that the dog has had surgery unless they open the pets mouth. Mandibulectomy See discussion for Maxillectomy. Amputation Amputation is necessary in the treatment of some tumors. It is always done with the pet's best interest in mind and is done as a medical necessity. In some cases involving tumors, limb sparing techniques may be an option. |
